Länsi-Pohja Hospital District
(Information as of 6 October at 12:26)
The Länsi-Pohja Hospital District is now in the baseline phase of the epidemic.
The use of face masks is still recommended, especially in indoor public areas where maintaining safe distancing is not possible
During this week, a total of 23 new coronavirus infections have been confirmed in the Länsi-Pohja Hospital District. About half of these are related to a cluster of coronavirus infections that occurred at Metsä Group’s Kemi plant. 11 of these cases are from people already in quarantine. For eight of these cases, the source of the infection is unknown. The number of cases is clearly rising and the disease is especially prominent among young non-vaccinated people.
According to the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare (THL) guidelines, the doctors responsible for communicable diseases in the area recommend using a face mask, especially in indoor public areas where safe distancing cannot be maintained. This face mask recommendation also applies to junior high schools. A face mask should always be worn when going to take a coronavirus test and before the results of the coronavirus test have been reported, if there is a necessary reason to exit the home. For those aged over 12 years who have not received two doses of the coronavirus vaccine or have had the COVID-19 disease less than 6 months previously, it is recommended for these people to use face masks in indoor public spaces and on public transport vehicles where other people are present.
During week no. 39 (11–17 January), a total of 45 new cases were confirmed. The number of people exposed to the virus is in excess of 400. Approximately 70% of last week’s cases relate to a cluster of coronavirus infections that occurred at Metsä Group’s Kemi plant. A total of four (4) infections from Sweden were confirmed. In some of the confirmed cases, the source of infection is unclear.
By 5 October, 72.9% of the population of Länsi-Pohja had received one dose of vaccination and about 60.8% has received both doses of the vaccine. This figure is slightly lower than the national level. Vaccines are now well available, so it is worth all those who are eligible for the vaccine to seek vaccination.
